Celebrating Family on Valentine’s Day

valentines-cover

Valentine’s Day is just a few days away and I always look forward to it.  The hubs and I had our very first date on Valentine’s Day, many moons ago when we were just kids in high school.  In the years since then, we have always marked the day and taken time to make sure the other knows just how loved they are.

But since having kids, our Valentine’s Days look a little different albeit in such a wonderful way.  My favorite thing about Valentine’s Day now is that we spend it as a family, making sure each member (not just mom and dad) knows how loved they are.  Our kids are only young once and we want to cherish every moment we have with them.  For us, it’s ok that we don’t get a romantic night out – there will be plenty of time for that later.  Truth be told, I would rather sneak a few date nights in on random (less expensive) nights throughout the year anyways.  So we use Valentine’s Day as a celebration of the love we have as a family.

When we started this tradition, it was more because our kids were too little and we didn’t have a babysitter but it has become something we all look forward to.  Every year now after dinner, we have a big pot of chocolate fondue for dessert.  Starting a tradition like this with your family doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, it doesn’t even need that much planning.  To inspire you to make your own memories, here are a few easy ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day (or any day!) as a family this year:

  1. Make dinner together as a family
  2. Make some popcorn and have a family movie night
  3. Go around the table and say one thing you love about each person
  4. Have a special dessert after dinnerimg_1016
  5. Play cards or a board game (or both!)

I hope this inspires you to do something special with your loved ones.  I’d love to hear what your family traditions are for Valentine’s Day too!
